How to lower credit card debt

When having credit card debt, consumers tend to become rather frustrating which is completely normal. Credit card debt was designed to benefit the banks and not necessarily the consumers. When struggling with credit cards, consumers tend to ask the question of how they can lower credit card debt. Thankfully, through the use of both debt consolidation and debt settlement consumers are now able to find a vast range of debt relief options which in turn can help the consumer when trying to become debt free.

Now although the debt cannot be lowered through debt consolidation, debt settlement will work to reduce the actual balance. The debt settlement program, is the procedure to which a consumer works to lower the credit card debt through the use of an attorney network. With the new laws that recently passed, the attorneys are more willing to work to help the consumer prior to being paid for their services.

How students can lower credit card debt

Going off to college is one of the most exciting times in one’s life. After college it may be a bit scary because it is now time to repay the school loans. How can you lower credit card debt?  What can be done during and after schooling to ensure you can pay the loans to the best to your ability? Below are a few tips to help you with these student loans.

  • Know what type of loan you have and how it works. Keep track of balances, payments and interest history. Knowing how your loan works will help you when it is time for repayment. It will be easier you to avoid late fees, and extra costs.
  • Try and lower your principal balances if at all possible. When making your minimum payment they will go towards late fees, then interest and lastly your principle. When possible pay extra so it will roll over to the principle. When you are able to lower the principal you are able to receive a lower interest. When making any extra payments be sure to include in writing that you want it applied to the principal balance. After receiving your statement check to make sure it was indeed made to the principal balance as you had requested.
  • Do what can be done to pay off your highest loans first. You may think that getting rid of the lower loans first will help. This is not necessarily true; it is wise to pay off the high interest loans first. Keep in mind that the better your payment history and the lower the balances, the better chance of getting lower interest. This will result in lower payments for most.
  • Educate yourself on loan forgiveness. There are programs that will forgive the student loan especially if you are employed in a certain area of employment. This is called Public Service Loan Forgiveness that is a federal program that will forgive student debts. The forgiveness applies to student loans that have been paid on ten years of qualifying payments. This is usually for employers who work in a government, federal or public setting. There is other type of loan forgiveness programs for other type of employers who have student loans that will be found under this forgiveness.
  • If you are having a hardship and unable to pay your student loans there are some options that may help. One of these programs would be debt consolidation. Debt consolidation loans are a type of loan that is given to consolidate the loans into one payment. One usually gets a lower payment, interest rate and minimum payment. See what can be done to get a fixed rate on the loan. The other option would be a debt settlement program. These programs will settle the debt to a lower amount with an extremely lower payment. With both programs make sure that you educate yourself before entering into any program.
  • If you run into problems that make you fall behind do not panic or ignore the situation. The worse thing that one can do is ignore what has happened. This is going to make matters worse very quickly. Call the lender immediately and fill him in on your situation. In most cases they will work with you in order to get you back on track. Ignoring the situation can cause a default or collection on the debt. This can put you in danger of being sued and ruining your credit.
  • Any changes to one situation should be reported to the lender immediately. If you move make sure that they are notified with the new information. If for any reason that they may need to contact you do to changes. Not knowing of any updates or changes can cause you to fall behind or not meet the requirements on the loan.

Following these tips will help the average student to get lower credit card debt. It will not be easy, but having a plan is a good start.
